ABOUT S.E.L.a.

Our Founders

James “Jamie” Aydelott and Theresa “Terry” Aydelott are lifelong residents of Freeport, New York, whose passion for youth development and community service has defined their decades of impactful contributions across Roosevelt, Freeport, and beyond. Together, they founded S.E.L.A. Academy to create opportunities that develop not only athletic skills but also academic excellence, career readiness, leadership programs, and strong character in young people.

Jamie began his youth service journey at just 24 years old with the Roosevelt Police Athletic League (PAL), where his leadership and dedication propelled him to become Vice President. Known for his ability to connect with and inspire youth, Jamie later founded the BBA Basketball Organization from his family’s barbershop in Freeport. BBA evolved into one of the region’s most significant youth programs, offering mentorship, structure, and life-changing opportunities both on and off the court. Its legacy continues to influence community programs today, including those at Zion Cathedral Cedarmore.

Terry has been an equally vital force behind their shared mission, providing her heart, organizational expertise, and mentorship to ensure that every initiative transcends sports. Her commitment to education, family values, and the empowerment of young women has been instrumental in shaping S.E.L.A. Academy’s holistic approach to youth development.

Our History

What began as community service through basketball leagues and local events has evolved into a multi-dimensional youth development movement. From mentoring students at S.E.L.A. Academy to organizing year-round leadership programs, the Aydelotts have built a legacy grounded in faith, family, and community. Their impact, which started in Roosevelt and Freeport, now extends across Nassau County and continues to grow, touching the lives of countless young people who have benefited from their guidance and support.
